The Vans Sk8-Hi is a shoe that has been around since 1966. It’s a real skate shoe. You can buy the Vans Sk8-Hi in a Pro version or a regular version. The Pro version has an extra sturdy toe, a stiff waffle sole that wears down less quickly and an Ultra Cush sole for the right cushioning. Thanks to the high-top look of the Sk8-Hi, it also gives more support around the ankles. A Pro and a shoe you can buy in most stores look exactly the same. Vans is a brand that was founded in 1966 as a true skate brand. The models back then were equipped with a reinforced toe, a stiff waffle sole and an extra set of laces. But the Vans brand slowly transformed into a casual brand. As a result, the quality changed too. For years, Vans sneakers have been a fixture of the sneaker market. Lots of people (young and old) love the Oldskool Low and the Sk-8 High, because of the shoe’s simple look. The look of these classic models has basically always stayed the same. Skating in these (fashion) versions, however, wasn’t really a success.

A Dura Cap is a silicone layer attached underneath the upper of the shoe. Skaters often slide the top of their foot across the board to get the board off the ground in one smooth motion. The top of a skateboard is covered with grip tape. Grip tape gives you good grip while skating, but it does wear through the top of your shoe. That’s why the Dura Cap makes the upper of your shoe last longer.

During the craziest moves and from sometimes dangerous heights, you can occasionally land hard on the ground. So it’s nice to have your landing well cushioned. With running shoes, the sole is rounded so that you land in one smooth motion. Skate shoes, on the other hand, need a flat sole to keep that ultimate board feel. An Ultra Cush insole makes sure your landing is still well cushioned, while you keep the right feel for your board. Even when you’re not skating, this sole provides soft cushioning, even though the shoes are flat.

The signature waffle sole of Vans can be found on almost every model. This pattern gives you good grip while skating and walking. These days, the waffle sole is designed so that it offers more grip at your big toe than at your little toe. This in turn gives you better board control. The quality of the rubber on the Vans Pro has also been improved compared to the fashion version. The color of the sole is often darker to clearly show that you’re dealing with Vans Pro.
